Some More Best Practice Tips When Installing & Routing Hydraulic Hose

Installing & routing hydraulic hoses within a circuit system is always a lot more than simply tightening the obvious connections. Hoses don’t last forever. But by observing some of HydPower’s best practice advice, you can help maximise their life and create more efficient systems in the process.

By following these great tips, you can extend the service life of your hoses fittings and components.

 1. Limit Bending To One Direction Only

The next best practice
tip is also focused on preventing hose twist and simply put, you want to limit the bending motion of the hose to a single dimensional way. Think of it like a hose
that is bending from left to right is moving in a single way or dimension, as would a hose that is moving up and down or forward and backward any combination of left or right forward and backward up to down, represents two planes o
f motion and al three represent three panels of movement. Multiple planes of motions are called compound bend, and this can cause a hose twist because the hose lines are fixed and held tight. This piece of best practice is to limit the motion to a single direction.

2. Clamp It Securely

One of the more common causes of premature hose failure is from abrasion that overtime removes the outside cover of the hose exposing the steel reinforcement. When This steel is exposed to moisture, it begins to rust and deteriorate and thereby reduces the hose service life. This best practice example is to ensure the hose is held in place with a clamp and therefore supported taking away chances of abrasion. Hose on hose abrasion is possible also, so each hose should be clamped individually.

3. Thinking Ahead

You can avoid this by thinking about the type of fittings you use. There are many different lengths and drops available that will give you the best chance of making the job much easier. Talk to HydPower about our fittings selection.

4. Key Points

Below are the key points of this issue of our industry insight series.

– Hose lengths shorten by as much as 4% when pressurised. So allow some extra.

– Do not bend the hose more than the maximum bend radius

– Keep the hose straight for around 2 x the OD

– Inspect for twists using the layline

– Limit hose bending to a single direction or plane

– Clamp Hoses to prevent abrasion

– Plan for future maintenance by selecting appropriate fittings in tight spaces.
